Help Button

MusAPP consists of the Content Module (CM) and the Performance Module (PM). The CM is the website where the lessons and exercises are stored. The PM resides on your desktop and helps you learn music by providing real time audio-visual biofeedback. The CM and PM interact to lead you through the learning process.

In the CM Exercise Wizard, there are some choices you can make that effect the way an exercise works in the PM. The options already highlighted are the default settings. You may select a setting by clicking on the option name to highlight it. When you have chosen your preferred settings, click the [Continue] button to download the exercise and open it in the PM. The [Activity Menu] button will return to the main activity menu where you may select a different exercise library.

These are the control buttons used in the PM and explanations of what they do:

MusAPPTM Task Bar:

  • Abreviations you should know. Exercises are written on:
    • Treble Clef (TC),
    • Bass Clef (BC),
    • Grand Staff, or
    • Open Score (SATB).
  • Back Button -- this is located on the top left corner of your screen.
    • In the CM, it acts like a regular "Back" button in the browser and takes you back one page.
    • In the PM, the Back Button will take you back to the CM.
  • Continue Button --
    • You will see a "Continue" button in the Performance Module. This button is only activated after you pass the exercise. It will take you to the next question page in the flow of the lesson, or return you to the Practice Session.
  • Start Exercise and Restart Exercise Buttons. --
    • The exercise will not start until you press the [Start] button.
    • To start the exercise again, click the [Restart] button.
  • Input Vocal Range Drop Menu --
    • The input vocal input range can be set to "High", "Medium", and "Low".
    • This sets the pitch follower to offset for high, medium, and low singing voices. High is usually for sopranos and high altos. Medium is used for tenors, baritones and low voice altos. Low is for low bass singers.
    • Choose the setting that best fits your vocal range.
    • This does not transpose the notation.
  • Input Instrument Drop Menu --
    • You must select the instrument you are playing from the drop menu.
    • This sets the pitch follower for the tuning of your instrument and offsets the pitch pointer to adjust for concert pitch playing.
    • This way, all instruments can play the same exercises without having to transpose the music for each instrument.
    • This does not transpose the notation.
  • Pause Toggle Button --
    • You can [Pause] the exercise to stop the pitch follower and judging function.
    • This lets you practice a section of the music without using the pitch follower.
    • You can also pause the exercise to talk about how to sing or play difficult passages, however it continues to record during the pause.
    • When you are ready to continue the exercise, press the [Pause] button again.
  • Play Recording Button --
    • MusAPPTM automatically records every performance.
    • Click the [Play] button to hear the recording of your last performance.

      • Email Recording Button --
        • MusAPPTM automatically records every performance.
        • When you are satisfied with your performance, you may email the recording file to your teacher.
  • Options Button
    • Tune Your Instrument
      • It is necessary that you tune your band or orchestra instrument to MusAPP. Since computer sound cards are often sharp or flat, you must tune you instrument to the output of the sound card so you can pass the exercises.
        • Select your instrument from the Input Instrument Drop Box.
        • Select the target pitch you want to tune to.
        • Play the target pitch on your instrument.
        • Tune your instrument to the target pitch by lining up the green pointer with the red target.
    • Volume Mixer
      • You must set the microphone volume to the sensitivity required by your microphone.
      • Your voice or instrument may be louder or softer and will require that you adjust the microphone sensitivity.
      • If you are using a chat headset, the microphone level will be lower than if you are using a desktop microphone.
      • You must adjust the speaker volume to match the sensitivity of your microphone to avoid feedback.
      • If your speakers are to loud, you will get feedback through your microphone and you will not be able to control the advancement of the pitch pointer.
      • If you are using a chat head set or a desktop microphone and audio headphones, there is less chance of getting feedback.
  • Help Button
    • The PM Help button will open a page that describes the use of each of the buttons used in the Performance Module.
    • The About]button shows you the version number of your installation of MusAPPTM
